Megan, 22, former supermarket sales assistant, Cheshire

“I left retail four months ago because customer abuse was getting worse. One customer kicked off over a 50p price increase on a multi-pack of crisps, she started shouting and calling me stupid, then she threw the contents of her shopping bag over me. I was in shock, but also felt embarrassed in front of other customers. You’re just expected to carry on serving them like nothing has happened.

“I had hot coffee thrown at me once which was scary and a creepy man who persistently came into the shop with gifts of flowers and chocolates. He found out my name and would sit outside staring at me through the window. That was the final straw. No job is worth somebody following me home and that needs to be taken more seriously.”
